The days flew by for us, and I have to admit it was much better spending my time with David than it was at work. Most of the time I stayed the night at my “suite” at his home, rather than the long drive home. Who am I kidding! It wasn’t the drive home that kept me there.

With “The Event of the Century” under control, and with me confident that our guests would be well taken care of there was a little more time to relax and just enjoy the approaching winter. There was also the Thanksgiving feast to prepare for. David’s mother would be coming up from Texas to prepare the meal. This was her tradition and I didn’t mind one bit not having that to contend with.

Every morning we would take his two dogs out running, and usually go to the stables down the hill at the back of the house. He kept a black stallion named Satan in there, and we would let Satan out to walk, and later run. Sometimes David rode him. I would watch and my breath would catch in my throat. What a beautiful site it was.

As Thanksgiving neared, his family began to arrive and the house became full of sounds. The kitchen more often than not was the meeting place in their morning, and everyone would discuss (more…)

HEIDI

HEIDI
Dana

Heidi was a chocolate Lab and her eyes were green. Her tail had barely any hair on it, her sides had barely any hair on them. This was when she was older.
We got her when I was just a little baby (I’m 8 1/2 now) and we had her almost eight years. My dad got her from a day care center. I’m not sure why she was left the day care center, but I think the kids were roughhousing with her. Her real owner fed her nothing but table scraps. They never gave her one little bit of dog food. We always gave her dog food but sometimes we gave her a little bacon. Other times she would eat our cat’s food.
She always followed my mom wherever she went. She never bit me, I never pulled her tail or ears, and I was never afraid of her.
When Heidi was a little puppy she liked to play ball a whole lot.
Heidi was thirteen years old when we had to put her to sleep. She wouldn’t get up, she kept on throwing up and she wouldn’t eat, and that’s when we knew we had to take her to the vet. She stayed overnight there, and she kept on throwing up in the night.
My mom was terrified when the vet said Heidi had to be put to sleep, so my grandma drove her to the vet. My mom cried the whole way there.
I felt sad when she was put to sleep and I miss her a whole lot.

The weeks flew by into summer. I worked and came home to messages from the wedding planners, and they demanded immediate attention. Usually one day on the weekend David and I would meet with them to make choices and give our approval or disapproval for one thing or another. It actually ended up being fun. We would make a day trip out of it and after the meeting spend the rest of the day exploring things in the area—the wineries, more galleries, or just the natural beauty nearby. Often in the evening I was his “arm candy” for functions with his partners in business. Their world was so different, but not unlearnable. Eventually, with David’s help and lessons, I learned to fit in with no fear.

David never relented on his campaign to have me quit my job. He even suggested (more…)

The next few weeks flew by. After work I had decisions to make each day.

One evening, we went back to dinner at the same place that we had had our first lunch. David said he had something he wanted to show me. After dinner we went outdoors and walked past that building and two others. They were so beautiful. They were hotels, each appointed with spas, meeting halls, banquet halls, restaurants and each a different rich and luxurious theme.

“These are mine…these are ours.” he signed to me. I only smiled. I was used to (more…)

My eyes flew open, and there were tears in David’s eyes. I asked him what was wrong and he put his hand across his mouth. He had wanted to speak that! He didn’t know that what came through his hands carried more feeling than any voice could have.

“I’ll be your wife” I answered him. He jumped up from his chair and pulled a box from his pocket. It contained (more…)

Conversation was a little difficult at that point. I didn’t know what to do or what to say. He told me he would show me to my suite in the house, and when I was ready we’d go out to see some things.

My suite? It was more like a wing. And it was full of bags of clothing and anything else I could possibly need. How did he do all this? Where was the life of struggle here? And did I really need (more…)

For the next few days I begged off seeing David. I was upset, sad. Any other negative mood you can think of I was wallowing in. On the third day, when I returned from work, he was waiting on my doorstep. “I’m sorry,” he signed.

We went inside and he asked me what he was sorry for. I had to tell him. “I don’t think I can see you anymore, David.”

There, I had bluntly stated it.

“Is it because of how I look?” he quickly signed.

“Oh no, David!” I was crying now and quietly added: (more…)

We ate lunch with intermittent conversation, he writing, me speaking. At one point he raised his hand and used what I guessed was sign language.

We walked through other galleries together. David was limping, obviously favoring his right leg. I was curious as a cat as to what happened to him, but he offered no explanation and I was too polite to ask. That politeness was difficult. I was biting my tongue. And darn it, I was becoming more interested in (more…)
