Prohibited Visit to Santa’s Shrine

PROHIBITED VISIT TO SANTA’S SHRINE

Janice McLaughlin

This piece was a response to the following weekly prompt e-mailed to Beanery Writers Group members and friends:

Pretend that you wake up Christmas morning to learn that your family went on a trip to the North Pole to visit Santa, and forgot you. How would you feel? What you would do while you were left home alone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
First they flew for hours on end–with all of that they did contend
In addition they had to rent a jeep, then wade through snow cold and deep.
Imagine their surprise — when before their eyes
the big (more…)
WALK SLOW AND NOTICE EVERYTHING
Kern F. Little
Walk Slow and Notice Everything
my father
walked slow
noticed everything
as a youth
I ran fast
missing everything
as a father
I rushed around
going to work
going to school events
visiting friends
just doing what needed done
missing everything
first he took my job away
I never slowed down
he took my wife away
I never slowed down
he took my (more…)
SING TO ME SOFTLY
Malaika King
I remember when
You used to sing me to sleep
The softness of your words
Bouncing off the walls
And cascading me
With your voice
I remember when
You used to (more…)
Cathi Rhodes posted the following poem in the comments box at the end of FLIGHT 93 CRASH SITE MEMORIAL posted on www.carolyncholland.wordpress.com . I took the liberty of posting it in the Beanery Online Literary Magazine.  Carolyn
You have to understand that at the time, I lived in the peaceful country in Stahlstown, not far from Shanksville. I quite often admired the open sky and used my telescope frequently. On this particular night, I was so moved that I HAD to write, as a catharsis, to help me deal with this tragedy. This is my poem.
9/11
Cathi Rhodes
The sky is quiet…and eerie…and still.
Only the stars give their light
For the innocent and uncounted souls
That ascended to Heaven before night.
A world in shock of a nation’s attack
Finds it so hard to believe
That evil (more…)
A SKY FULL OF DIAMONDS
Malaika King
~~~~~~~~~~~~

I wanted a star to hold and call my own

So I climbed the tallest ladder up to the sky

I was surprised to find that stars aren’t stars at all

I hold in my palms a handful of diamonds

Diamonds I picked from the sky

They cut my fingers and make them raw but I don’t care

These diamonds are mine

I reached for the moon, but missed

I reached for the stars, but was wrong

I reached for myself and found

I had a hidden sky

A sky full of Diamonds

The taste of blood was on my lips,

Nothing new for me.

I let it run and drip away,

At least something here was free.

The screams and pain were nothing new,

I’ve tried to hide the truth.

But others are smart and know too much,

What more (more…)

GHOSTS UNSEEN

Malaika King

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Light from the moon spills across your face where the curtain was left parted
 Even though we are inside
Buried under sleeping bags it still feels as if it’s below freezing
You sigh
Icy cold air comes out of your mouth
Forming shapes between us
Outside a cloud moves in front of the moon
Every line and crease on (more…)
