TRUTH

Joe F. Stierheim

During the week I found a plastic grocery bag hanging on the front door of the Unitarian Universalist Church. I looked in the bag and saw that it contained two videotapes and, thinking it was a delivery that someone in the congregation had requested, I took it into the church and out of the weather.

On Sunday I found out that no one knew anything about the tapes. On closer inspection it was found that the tapes were a two-part copy of “The Greatest Story Ever Told”. It is assumed that they were left at the church as an act of (more…)

“SINGING MY VICTORY SONG”

Della Spearman

Going to do the Lord’s battle today

Taking my buckler, sword and shield,

Armed with my worship odes and poems,

There’s an arsenal of inspiring praise songs.

I’m looking at Jehosophat as my guide,

And I’m stretching out on obedient faith

Marching to (more…)

ARE YOU A MARTHA or a MARY? Lent Devotion #38

Tom Groomes

SCRIPTURE: Luke 10: 38-40  Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”(NKJV)
DEVOTION: I arose at 5:45 a.m. that July Sunday morning, feeling the beauty of a new day. The ground was wet with heavy dew; the sun was beginning to warm the day. The birds sang as if they too were praising our Lord for his marvelous creation of this earth.
While other family members slept on, I decided to enter the quiet of my church to read Scripture.
As I entered the sanctuary I noticed the dirt from (more…)

GOD’S MESSAGE TO THE WORLD

Joe F. Stierheim

Dona-el called to the brethren. “Come! Come here! Quickly!”
The brethren ran up. “What is it?” they asked breathlessly.
“I’m talking to God!” Dona-el answered.
“What?” The brethren wondered—had Dona-el gone mad?
“I don’t see God,” one of the brethren said. “Where is He?”
“There,” Dona-el said, pointing at the sky. “In that cloud. He spoke to me out of that cloud.”
The brethren stared at the sky, at the cloud Dona-el indicated. It was just a cloud.
“I don’t see God,” said the brother. “It looks like just a (more…)

LITTLE EARS ARE LISTENING

Fran

“I want to be a body tool when I grow up!” little Jerry told his mom.
“A what?” the very surprised mom asked.
Jerry looked her square in the face and said, more loudly, “I told you I want to grow up to be a body tool just like daddy.”
The young mom was at a loss for words. Daddy was an ad executive who occasionally did ad work for tool companies, but to her knowledge the little boy had never seen any of them. And the last thing she wanted was for her son to (more…)

JESUS

I picked up a squirrel lying in the road.
I pitied him, thought him a poor fellow
And deserving of enough dignity
To be spared being crushed by tyres in the sun.
I thought about other daily slaughters:
How many snails had been crushed (more…)

BELONGING TO JESUS Lent Devotion #7

The Rev. Audrey Bell

Scripture: Romans 1:5-6 Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. (NIV)

DEVOTION: Recently a friend of mine told me when her grandson came home from preschool he told her he’d had a “sad day.” Not knowing what he meant by this, she questioned him further. He finally told her (more…)
