The Twin Towers

BEANERY ONLINE LITERARY MAGAZINE

THE TWIN TOWERS

M. I. Marcum

The World Trade Center, from its earliest conception, held a unique place in the heart of New Yorkers. There were many opposed to the project because it would diminish their cherished landmark, the Empire State Building. Others were excited by the challenge of building, not one but two monuments of such unknown scale.

The Twin Towers, as they became known, slowly rose higher and higher until they overshadowed the skyline of Manhattan. They could be seen for miles. It was difficult to encompass the scale of their massiveness as you stood looking up from ground level.

Still, many were reluctant to embrace them as part of the New York City, which they knew and loved. Others streamed to take the ride to the very heights. My sister was one of those people. She described to me an adventure, an experience of incomparable wonder. She insisted I visit the restaurant located on the very top floor to enjoy what she had seen. I promised I would one day.

The years went by. The Towers became not just tourist attractions but an important piece of New York’s business and commerce, employing thousands of people that streamed to its offices from surrounding states and boroughs and Long Island. People you saw on the Long Island Railroad, on the expressway, in the restaurants, at the hot dog stands, shopping at Macy’s.

Then on that beautiful September day, the Towers (more…)

IDLEWILD AMUSEMENT PARK MEMORIES

Patricia Orendorff Smith

Many of us have visited Idlewild Park in Ligonier Township, Pennsylvania. I asked my friend, Jackie, to recount her memories in the late 1950s to the 1970s.

“Since I was a baby, my dad attended Rockwell Manufacturing, Inc. picnics at Idlewild,” Jackie said. Her family has slides of their time spent there. “I wonder if I remember the occasion or if my memories come from the pictures.”

Jackie’s first memory at four years of age revolved around the roller coaster. She thinks she was too young to ride the tall ride.

“My sister and I always wanted a gold fish at the Goldfish Pond,” Jackie said. “My sister got one.” Jackie was determined to get a goldfish. She saved money and when she was eight, she won a goldfish. “I had to walk around the park all day (carrying it).” On the ride home, Jackie remembered (more…)

BEANERY WRITERS NEWSLETTER (BWN): MARCH 1, 2010

BEANERY WRITERS NEWSLETTER (BWN)

MARCH 1, 2010

Edited by Carolyn C. Holland and BWG members.

(Forward this newsletter to the writers you know!)

ABOUT THE BEANERY WRITERS NEWSLETTER

The BWN shares information on our members—their writing, their activities/interests/accomplishments, their concerns, their thoughts, as well as news on conferences, perhaps a joke or two, book reviews etc.

There was a two month hiatus in publication—July and August—this year.

BEANERY ONLINE LITERARY MAGAZINE CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The BOLM (www.beanerywriters.wordpress.com) accepts submissions (in any genre) from guest writers. Items may be edited, but if there are any significant changes your work will be returned to you for your approval.. Submit your post to beanerywriters@yahoo.com with the word “Submission” in the subject line. Seeking submissions for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve/Day.

BEANERY WRITERS GROUP MEETINGS

The BWG meets the second and fourth Fridays each month, 1:00-3:00 p.m, (except for November and December, when the second meeting of the month is cancelled). We meet in the back room at the Coffee Bean Café in Latrobe (they opened a second Coffee Bean Café on Rt. 30 in Greensburg by Office Max—wrong site!). Some members come early to socialize over coffee or lunch. New members—or visitors (including writers who are visiting the area from out of town)—are welcome to join us. Our members are eclectic: they write in all genres!

NOTE: Coming meeting dates: Sept. 11 & Sept. 25; Oct. 9 & 23

THE TEMPORARY CESSATION OF THE BEANERY WRITERS NEWSLETTER

I want to apologize for the temporary cessation of the BWN. I experienced a period of extreme sleeplessness last summer, followed by a five-week attack by a rotten bug that lasted until Thanksgiving. Some things had to be let go, and even then I became quite behind in what needed to be done for the holiday season.

Meanwhile, I came to realize that a monthly newsletter is too big a task with my other writing. Therefore, the newsletter will be produced every two months: March, May, July, September, November and January. This has an additional bonus of freeing up the extended holiday that occurs at the end of each year.

Meanwhile, I will continue posting information on conferences, contests, etc. in the Beanery Online Literary Magazine. Check the ANNOUNCEMENT category (listed in the left hand column of the magazine site) for the most recent post.

PROFILE:

Joan Patterson (written by Tim Landy): When friends stop by Joan Patterson’s weathered farmhouse in late summer or early autumn, more than likely she’ll be in her garden, puttering with her perennials or picking vegetables or resting in her favorite spot: a shadowy bower at the end of a winding path.

For Joan, this dome-shaped shelter, formed from bowed saplings and cloaked in spiraling bean plants and morning glories, is the center of her miniature Eden.  The garden, in turn, is the focal point of her 140-acre farm, sprawling along a narrow black-topped lane, threading through the upland meadows and thickets of northern Bullskin Township, Pennsylvania.

Seated at a small crude table covered with a pink tablecloth, she may be (more…)

MOVING TO THE (LAUREL RIDGE) MOUNTAINS

Mustang Sally

We did that a year ago. Moved to the mountains.  So here we are.   We drive into the driveway and sit for a moment, overwhelmed by the beauty of the sunlight filtering through the hemlocks and the roar of Pike Run as it tumbles down the mountain.  We have learned to say Don-e-GAL is where you get off the turnpike. We can now refer to LAY-trobe as the home of (more…)
