AN OAK TREE MARKS THE PLACE

In my front yard stands a large, hundred-year old white oak tree. Its branches reach more than thirty feet up and out to the sky and its roots anchor it deep into the rocky hillside. Each year, little by little, the tree grows, obeying its own ancient genetic script.

THE TIME IS NOW…

At one of the initial meetings of the Beanery Writers Group, the prompt “THE TIME IS NOW,” was used. Below are the results from that exercise.

Pat wrote: The time is now to start writing. With that first burst of cool air, my energy returns in full. No excuses. Clean out those files. Discard useless clutter. Organize those delicate clips in a scrapbook. Start rewriting and sending out to different magazines. No more diversions–coffee breaks, pencil sharpening, petting the cat, scrubbing the floor. Sit in that chair and write, now!

BUTLER STREET

—written by Regina (Butler Street was my first piece of writing)

Still dazed by what had transpired before me, I leaned over the kitchen sink and ran cool water over the rags I had gathered while I asked the woman to be seated. Under the circumstances, I was amazed at how calm I felt and suppose I may have been in shock. But there was little time to think of myself as I stared at the woman in the dining room, crying, her faced streaked with tears and blood asking, “Why is this happening?”
