Standing in line gives me time to think. Today, I was thinking about probability– specifically, the probability that my quart of cherry-vanilla ice cream would melt before the lady in front of me finished her transaction.

She was ancient and oddly-dressed: flat, white sandals with purple socks, blue corduroy slacks, and a reddish floral print blouse under a dark green sweater. She wore a curly brown wig and held an unfiltered cigarette in her hand, (more…)

A FAT CAT AND A SAD DAD

As a former mother of preschoolers, and a family day care home provider, I always appreciated little rhymes to share with and create with the children. I especially liked the rhymes that would lead the child to learning to appreciate reading and writing.
After my daughter in law, Tammy, and grandson VINCE shared with me the rhymes they created together, they agreed I could share them with you. So today’s posting is for the young children in your life. —Carolyn

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

From the

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS 2007-B

According to the PNC press release announcing what the “true love” pays to purchase all the gifts on his Christmas list (as laid out in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas”), the total cost can be calculated four different ways: the purchase of one set of items for each day (77 items) or “True Cost of Christmas,” the total cost of items gifted by a True Love who repeats the gift-giving in all of the song’s verses (364 items), for both traditional and Internet shopping.

2007 is the twenty-third year the gift costs have been calculated by PNC. The gift prices rose 3.1 percent above what they cost in 2006. This mirrors the U.S. government’s Consumer Price Index (a widely used measure of inflation calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics), up 3.5 percent so far this year.

“Each year, the Christmas Price Index reflects trends in the broader economy,” (more…)

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS 2007-A

—written by Carolyn C. Holland

Most people assume that the song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” is secular music. They are surprised to learn it was written for religions reasons.

There was a period in England, circa 1558-1829, when it was a crime to be a Catholic, and the law banned them from any private or public practice of their faith. (more…)

I need your help to settle an argument I’m having with my girlfriend. A postcard containing the words, “GEOFF IS RIGHT.” will do nicely. Thanks. I’m assuming that by now, all the guys are busy looking for pens, and the women are still reading this, waiting to hear my girlfriend’s side of the story. I’ll try to be objective, (more…)

MY 2007 WRITING EXPERIENCE

In 2007, my writing “career” hit high and low points.

My only article published was one on a Holocaust survivor, Bob Mendler, which appeared in the Westmoreland County (PA) Historical Society magazine in April.

Meanwhile, I was offered two writing jobs “out of the blue,” which is very good for a writer’s ego—and I admit, my ego blossomed. (more…)

I like cats.

My cat is fat.

His name is Tigger.

He gets bigger and bigger.

I don’t now why, but I call him Mister Kidder.

The Beanery Online Literary Magazine (BOLM) is a publication of the Beanery Writers Group in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The group is small, eclectic and not afraid to wade in new waters.

Publication of an online literary magazine distinguishes the Beanery Writers Group from the numerous other writing groups in Westmoreland County (Southwestern Pennsylvania). We are often asked why we began the BOLM, how we chose its blog format, and what challenges we faced in the process.

At writing conferences, and in my online exploration of material for meeting “lessons,” a consistent message kept emerging: WEBSITES are a “necessity” for writers. It was a message I believed our fledgling writers group needed to explore. (more…)
