Lady Diana Spencer danced easily
into our hearts
her extraordinary beauty,
charismatic presence, captivating us.
Young, carefree, a ballerina wannabe,
she rose in arabesque pose
or energetically tap-danced through Althorp’s halls.
Her heart aflutter, she caught Prince Charles’ eye;
the delicate butterfly, a princess-in-waiting,
she passed long, empty hours
practicing tap or ballet in the royal Throne Room.
Following the wedding, a light-hearted Diana
danced spontaneously down the aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral,
stained-glass reflections sparkling like jewels beneath her feet,
the voluminous bridal veil draped over her arm.
Diana danced throughout the world;
at Covenant Garden’s Royal Opera House,
gliding across center stage with Wayne Sleep,
lithe and graceful as a gazelle,
dazzling the audience with her performance!
At the Gillies Ball, poised and confident,
she waltzed and fox-trotted with the Palace Steward
a man renowned for his dancing skills.
John Travolta swept her across the ballroom floor
at the White House and in Australia,
she danced with Prince Charles, exquisite in turquoise satin,
a beaded necklace headband gracing her forehead.
For the rest of her life she quick-stepped,
dodged paparazzi, reporters, photo-hungry media
seeking solitude, serenity, sanity. . .
Conspiring with a few close friends she escaped,
dancing the night away on the disco floor,
the heartbeat of life pulsing through her veins,
freeing her spirit from loneliness and pain.
Diana danced alone in her bedroom,
or in the nursery with Prince’s William and Harry
small hands entwined in hers, she held them close to her heart. . .
On a hot August night
in Paris’ Place de L’Alma tunnel
England’s Rose was crushed,
her body enmeshed in tons of mangled steel.
the fatal accident claiming her life. . .
“a thing of beauty gone forever”
were strewn, while mourner’s tears dropped like petals. . .
The People’s Princess, compassionate, caring,
embraced the hurting, the helpless, the hopeless
around the world.
In their lives and hearts
Diana will dance forever. . .
