Shalimar, exotic cat
shadow of her past
darkly mysterious
independent
proud
watches me with topaz eyes,
regally surveying
everything she sees.
Perched on the windowsill
she daintily licks her paws
cleans between each toe,
washes ears and face
in circular pace,
then resumes her statue pose,
curled tail tip thumping.
Rough tongue rhythmically moving
she sleeks her fur
biting here and there
to unknot tuffs of hair,
then fluffs her ruff.
Suddenly it’s up and away,
time for a little play
as she chases yarn and ball,
skitters crazily down the hall
slipping and sliding
reappearing, then hiding
scrunching rug pyramids against the wall
Dashing to the door
she scratches the screen,
her huntress instinct in high gear.
“Let mee…ooow…tttt please!”
Once outside she pursues the hunt,
emitting strange gutteral sounds
pounces on bugs, butterflies and birds
rolls in the grass and dirt
claiming her turf. . .
