WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LEAVE OUR NEIGHBORHOODS TO GO TO CHURCH…
Twenty years ago we moved into the country. Lots of people must have been following our every move, because they’re here now. The newly arrived have built nice homes, but newer homes sometimes share proximity to more modest older housing.
In such situations latecomers feel a pre-existing home pulls down the value of their more costly abodes.
Years ago there was an example of such a house at the intersection of our country road with the state highway. Two brothers lived there, both mentally handicapped, one more than the other. That is all we knew about them, other than the fact they were spoiling the “entrance” to the otherwise beautiful road we new folks had chosen to live along.
All of us were guilty of complaining at dinner parties that “something should be done.”
The situation took care of itself. One killed the other and the police hauled the guilty brother to jail.
We were relieved to be rid of a dangerous man and the irritating eyesore, which was soon removed.
At supper last night my wife spoke of meeting a gentleman who has lived around here a long time. He explained that when the more capable of the two brothers ran out of resources for food, he could not figure out what to do next.
As they got hungrier, he shot his brother to put him out of his misery.
He called the police, walked out to the side of the road and sat down to wait for them.
I passed that place every day wishing it would just go away and never caring who might go with it.
If we leave our neighborhoods to “go to church,” are we failing to see Christ as we drive past Him?
